External Speaker Problem After Upgrade to Vista

I just upgraded to Vista and now have an issue with my external speakers.
When I go to the Control Panel to "test" them, they work fine. When I play a
song or listen from a web site, I only hear the internal speakers. I have
already searched and done an install for new drivers. Any suggestions?

Guess I should clarify:
I have a brand new HP Pavilion. Realtek speakers are being used.
