external monitor

With my Dell laptop with ATI rage, I used to be able to select an external
monitor. Now I only get only one monitor on the desktop>properties>settings,
and selecting "advanced", does no longer shows the "displays" tab for
selecting the external monitor. I already disabled/reinstalled the video
driver, but no result. Thanks for any advise.
