External HDD's and Card Readers for Vista 64-Bit

I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit edition running on:

Asus Crosshair AM2 Mobo
AMD X2 6000+ Processor
W.D. Cavair RE2 500GB SATA HD

I have installed a 52 in 1 card reader in the machine, the machine detects
the USB port on the device but does not detect any of the other card readers.
Also I recently updated my MoBo BIOS and now my external HDD will not
detect. I can run it on WinXP Pro on my laptop and the external HDD shows up
in BIOS as well as the card readers whenever using a Rescue Disk. I don't
understand, Device Manager is showing errors for Mass Storage Device (the
card readers) and External HDD (obviously the external HD). If I need
drivers Windows can not find them online. I have searched for the drivers
online but to no avail.

The external HDD is Western Digital MyBook Essential Edition (500 GB)
The card reader is Sabrent USB 2.0 Internal Card reader

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I didn't know switching over to Vista
would be so difficult.

Dylan,

Sometimes resolving USB device driver installation issues like you may have
can be resolved by deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, which can get corrupted with
bad data and cause issues. The file is located at: C:\Windows\inf. There,
scroll down to the INFCACHE.1 file and right click it and select delete. To
do this, you will likely have to give yourself permission to delete it,
because of Windows built-in Security. Just right click the file, select
Properties and then click on the security tab. Post back on the results,
since I can't be certain about your situation. Just something to try.

I set Security settings to Full Control and deleted the file, I rebooted and
still nothing would work. Is there more information that I can provide that
will help you try to solve the problem?

Dylan,

Vista has built-in support for USB, but USB issues can be hard to diagnose,
because of difficulty in identifying the various possible sources of the
problem. I can only suggest that you perform more detailed troubleshooting.
The following site was established by HP to aid their customers in isolating
USB detection issues. Since USB is a universal standard, the troubleshooting
steps the site suggests can be used by anyone:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c00820197

Take a look to see whether something there applies to your situation. In
addition, since you updated your BIOS, check your settings there to make sure
no setting in BIOS is a source for the problem. Post back on results.

OKay I unfortunately have a USB keyboard and mouse so I could only disable
one USB Root Hub at a time. When I restarted the computer detected my card
reader drives but once I plug cards into them Windows then installs SM and SD
card drivers and after that the drives disappear. I still can't the external
HD to come back. I think I am going to talk to Western Digital and see what
they can do regarding that. Since I am using USB devices I can't disable
Legacy, there is also no setting changes in the BIOS to throw anything off.
I may also downgrade the BIOS to the original that I had before and see if
that fixes anything. Please track this thread I won't be able to work with
the PC until probably Monday of next week. Thank you so much for the help so
far.

If everything worked before you flashed the bios (why did you do so?), flash
it again back to the original bios version. It sounds like you either
flashed with an improper file of the flash got corrupted.

I flashed just for the updates, so far i've gotten everything to come up
again. There was a hotfix for the Western Digital which fixed that problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/925528/en-us

However the computer is still searching for drivers for both the card reader
and the HD. Before I flashed the BIOS with the new version it was still not
detecting the card reader it was just detecting the HD. Are there any driver
solutions for my problems?

Dylan,

You likely already have the proper drivers on your system, but some
corrupted inf related files could be the source of your problem. The
following article describes how to recover a corrupted Vista data base, such
as you seem to have:

http://forums.logitech.com/logitech/board/message?board.id=bluetooth&message.id=4357

The above described procedure is more extensive than the one where you
remove the one infcache.1 file. If you decide to perform this procedure, on
the first reboot after completing the effort, connect your USB devices. Upon
booting, Windows will commence installing some (maybe all) your USB devices
automatically. If Windows asks for drivers, point it toward
C:\Windows\System32.

Of the three individuals I know of who performed this procedure on this
forum, all of them reported that their USB recognition problems were 100%
resolved. Post back on results.

I will give this is a try as soon as possible, i've been running into issues
at the moment with startup. I will let you know as soon as I can get this
other issue resolved.

I tried these steps to fix the problem, the harddrive came up fine it still
searched for a driver that failed but it is working, as well as the card
readers and my iPod. If anything happens when I get back on Monday I will
post any changes. Thanks for your help!
