External HDD on USB - Data Execution Prevention Stops Explorer

Suspect recent Windows Update. Has only started occuring in the last month or
so.

When connecting a HDD, with operating system on it, to USB port, Windows XP
Pro SP2 runs Autoplay then brings up box asking "What do you want Windows to
do?".
Selecting "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer" and OK,
Explorer opens then is closed by Data Execution Prevention with the statement
"To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.", "Name:
Windows Explorer".
The only option available is to close Explorer.
This also happens when navigating to the external HDD via My Computer.

This does not occur with a freshly formatted or data only drive.

Short of making changes to Data Execution Prevention, how do I read HDDs to
back up user files before reformatting/repartioning/reinstalling Windows?

**Also note that this has only occured in the last month or so suggesting a
Windows Update

Nope. DEP has been around longer than a month or so... And, its
automatically enabled at the software level. There is an option to disable
it. It can be a hardware level thing as well if capable on your PC.

Would DEP say explorer.exe or Windows Explorer?

Is there a chance, that due to the worm that is going around which uses
autorun to copy itself, DEP has been updated to account for that?

Just a thought.
