external HDD BAD

my external harddrive is apparently BAD when i go on to partition magic is
says it is a bad hdd how can i fix it
 
You use the diagnostics tool provided by your external or hd manufacturer,
if that reports the drive has failed, well you need to replace it

Are you plugging directly into a USB port? Have you tried another USB
port.

i have it pluged in to a USB extender (converts one USB port to four(not sure
of the name))

Have you tried another USB port i.e. not through the extender?

Is it a external drive with a built-in USB port only or through some USB/IDE
converter or something alike?
