The second generation firewire is about double the speed of USB 2.0 but
still isn't as fast as eSATA.

Thanks Michael,
I've not hooked up my Dell PDA to Vista yet(its about the same vintage as yours but an Axim X3) though I'm already running the PPC2003 with Office 03 on the XP side. Amazing how pda have become extensions of our hands and brain.

Have you noticed any other performance issues in Vista or with the Axim PDA in Vista and the Mobile Device Center ?

In Windows were all 'On The Way Home' and Clancy still can't sing :)

: Thanks, Winston.
:
: I was dual booting up until about a week ago. I might have dropped XP
: sooner but my PDA, a Dell Axim X5 was not compatible with the new Sync
: Center. I really didn't want to purchase a new PDA and Dell no longer
: offered the PPC 2003 upgrade, in fact, for the time being, they are out of
: the PDA business with the exception of selling third party models. I found
: a guy on Ebay who was selling a copy of the upgrade for $4 and change plus
: shipping. For the little over $7, I figured it was worth a shot. He sent
: me a burned a copy, it updated my Axim and I was back in business.
:
: I updated my Acronis True Image and Disk Director to current versions,
: backed up my partitions, wiped my hard drive and started over, installing
: Vista and rebuilding my partitions and creating new master images of my
: setup.
:
: I'm currently using WLMD for newsgroups and Hotmail. For my pop3 accounts,
: contacts, scheduling, etc. I'm using Outlook 2003.
:
: Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but with the long weekend, I just
: didn't get back online until today.

PPC2003 works very well with MDC, and Office 2007 but PPC2003 is not
compatible with WMP11, so if your PPC is docked you get a warning message
every time you open WMP11. Maybe some units have a patch for this but my
Viewsonic V37 doesn't.

Winston, I believe the X3 was released with PPC 2003. I was right on the
cusp when I bought my Axim X5 in February, 2003. No performance issues but
I don't recall seeing a nag asking whether I just wanted to sync my device
with my PC or sync both ways. After the sync, my calendar in Outlook 2003
suddenly had multiple listing for appointments, holidays and notes. I had
to go in and delete the extra listing by hand, one by one. I just put the
calendar in List view which made it easier but still, I'm not exactly sure
how it happened.:)

Maybe Clancy just has laryngitis.<LOL>

I haven't had any performance issues at all. In fact, Vista runs faster and
smoother on my system than did XP. Of course, I realize my experience is
not necessarily representative and given what we're seeing in these groups,
hardware and setup can make all the difference.

The only application giving me trouble is Mailwasher Pro 5.3 which crashes a
lot and gives me a lot of errors when its running but it was doing that in
XP as well. This has been the worst build I've seen from them in a long
time. Their forums are pretty well lit up with it as well.

The only other issue I have is that HP still hasn't posted Vista drivers my
Laserjet 1018 printer. It seems that 6310 officjet I purchase a month ago
was a fortuitous decision!:)

No such issue when I open Gom Player with my PDA docked.

You're welcome, Lee. We saw some conflicts with WMP 11 during the beta and
someone mentioned the Gom Player. I tested it on XP with good results and
then tested it on Vista with no problems either. It supports a wide range
of formats, if it doesn't have a codec it will take you to a download site
where it often has the necessary codec with install instructions and if you
have a series of files, all in the same format and a part of the same group
of files, it will play them all in sequence rather than forcing you to click
each one separately. It's very light on the system and has no DRM. Um,
however, if DRM support is required, it might not play the file!<VBG> I
haven't run into that...yet!

Thanks,
I recall having a similar issue on a sync with duplicates in OL03 but really can't recall any of the specifics either on how it happened. One thing I do remember is that my duplicates were restricted to items with alternate email addresses. Like you 'list' view manual delete handled it.

Thanks for the info. I'll remember that though I normally don't use WMP in Vista preferring Itunes.

I'm new to backing up files, so I know nothing about it, but from what I've
read so far, will it be ok to use a USB external hard drive and a backup
software, like Acronis, which I've heard is the best?

Yes that's what I use in Vista. Acronis True Image Home version 10 is the
latest build. I do a full image weekly to an external drive, then a nightly
incremental image. All this is scheduled from within Acronis TI. I
alternate between two external drives on a weekly basis so one can be stored
off site.

Look for the best price for Acronis TI. Don't get it from their web site.
Newegg.com sometimes has a great prices on it. After installing it and
registering it with Acronis get the latest build from the Acronis web site
before using it. That is build 4942.
