External Hard Drive

I am in the fortunate position of having an external USB hard drive of double
the capacity of my main drive. My idea was to partition the drive with the
first partition exactly the same size as my main C Drive and then have this
as a replica of my C drive. Hopefully, if anything horrible befell my main
drive, I would then be able to boot from the external drive and run my
computer whilst sorting the original frive.

However, I am also now told by various friends that this is just not
possible as DOS will never recognise the external USB and boot from there and
I will never get an exact copy of my system to the external drive.

Does anyone know different?

Just an additional note. Norton Ghost does not recognise my external USB
drive which is an Archos.

Your friends are correct. As far as I know, Windows XP will not boot from an
external drive...
