external hard drive/printer conflict

I received an external hard drive for Xmas and installed it. Since
installation my printer will not print. The computer gets the msg but the
printer does not. I worked with printer support over 3 hrs uninstalling and
reinstalling drivers for printer. They say everything is working yet when I
try to print it gets hung up in the print que.

If you uninstall the new hard drive does the printer work OK?
Have you done a System restore?
Are they both USB?

Hi Bird,
I think the tow are conflicting in the IRQ or the Port, try to open the
Device manager, how?:
Right click My Computer >> Select properties >> On the system Properties
click on Hardware Tab then click on Device Manager Button.
On Device Manager see if there is a conflict or malfunction Device, either
an exclamation mark or Red(X) will show beside the Device, Note down and try
to change the IRQ if it is the case of one of them to An available IRQ.
Does the printer work if you Disconnect the External Hard Drive or Vice
Versa?.

I checked all of that and there are no red x's or exclamations. When I
called the external hard drive company they determined that because my
printer has card slots for my camera, it is acting like another USB port.
They said to go to Dell website and reload chip set driver. Does that make
sense?

they are on the same "Root Hub." It could be that the harddrive and
printer are drawing too much power when they are both connected. You
might want to try using a powered USB hub.

Yes, that made Great deal of sense, since we don't know what make/model your
printer is, we cannot just guess.

printer are drawing too much power when they are both connected. You
might want to try using a powered USB hub.

I have unplugged the external hard drive from its USB port and the printer
will still not work. I reloaded the chip set driver from Dell and this has
not helped. My next plan is to do a complete restore before the date of when
I installed the drive. But do you think a different one would work with this
system. I am completely stumped and I have exhausted all contacts to whom I
could turn to for advice.
