External Hard Drive Lost

My pc was accidentily unplugged without shutting down
yesterday. Now Windows will not display the external hard
drive in explorer. In the disks management utility it is
listed as "unrecognized". It is listed as connected in
the plug-in icon on the bottom right.

Should I uninstall the device and then reinstall?

It is a Maxtor USB external drive.

Please help. Thanks.
 
Yes, but it should be recognized on it's own when you reboot (rescan
in device manager) without reinstalling manually.

Incidentally, unplugging without shutting down should not cause this.
There might be something else going on. Are you using W2K?
