external hard drive error

I'm using a external 2.5" usb/firewire enclosure with 40GB hdd connected on
a winxp sp2 notebook. It used to work fine, until I was unable to access the
hard drive. Windows detects the drive, but pops up the message E is
unaccessible, file or directory is corrupted. Diskmanager detects it too and
says everything is fine. Partition magic gives the following error:
Error#1507 Bad file record Signature. Chkdsk won't start up on the drive. I
might be able to make it work again with format, but I want to keep the
data. Is there any other way?

You might try the drive manufacturers site and look around for a
diagnostic/repair utility (WD = Windows version of the Data Lifeguard
Diagnostics utility, Maxtor = Powermax etc.) or goto the manufacturer of the
box and see if they have anything.
