External Hard Disc problem

Hi,

I hope I'm in the right group for this problem...
I have an external hard disc, placed in an icy box... never had any
problems, all my backups are on the drive...
But yesterday, when I plugged the external hard disc in, the power went
off right when i plugged the usb in
When I don't plug the usb in, the power can stay forever...

Has anyone had this problem yet? I hope someone can help me, cuz I have
a new laptop , and I really need the setup and backup files! :(

Thank you

So you are saying that when you plug the drive into your laptop, the
external drive powers off? If this is correct, then the power outage
damaged your external enclosure. Let's hope it didn't damage the drive. If
you have a desktop machine, remove the drive from the external enclosure
and slave it in the desktop. Then you can test the drive with a diagnostic
utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website. You can also burn all
that data to CD/DVD which would be smart.

If the drive tests OK, then buy another external enclosure.

I'll try to do that, or try to find some firewire controller where I
can put the external disc on... maybe it could be the usb controller
only...althought I think you're right, and the enclosure is broken :(

Hopefully the disc isn't screwed!

thank you
