External DVD Burners

External DVD/CD Burners do not work with DVD's

I have two DVD Burners;
1.) TDK 440n External (Multiformat)- about 1 year old
2.) NEC ND-3520A 16x Dual Layer DVD+RW/-RW CD R-RW - brand new
-This is installed in a Metal Gear Box External USB 2.0 enclosure

I interchange on three computers;
1.) eMachine T2862 / 2.66 GHz Celeron / 256MB DDR RAM (PC2700)/ WinXPH SP2 /
Hardrives = #0 - 60GB #1 - 250GB External 160GB / Internal Intel Video & Sound
2.) Gateway 500LTD / 1.5GHz P4 / 1024 MB RAM (PC100)/ WinXPH SP2 / 20GB /
External 160GB / nVidia 5800 / Internal sound
3.) Sony VIAO PCG-Z505LSK (LAPTOP)/ 750MHz P3 / Win2K Pro (use only to play
DVD's and VCD's)

I also have WinDVD / ROXIO / NERO software available

Story: TDK burner quit recognizing DVD's all of a sudden. TDK Tech support
assisted but could not determine issue. I purchased the NEC unit new; found
out it does the same thing. They both are recognized a DVD burners in Windows
but do not recognize blank, burnt or commercial DVD's.

The only thing I can narrow this to is they all use the USB connections.

Any ideas? Please!

Whoops, cat on keyboard.

I'd suggest the first place to start would be the USB ports themselves. Are
they known to be working with other USB devices?

Sorry, I show have thought to note this in the first post.

Yes, the USB ports are working.

The TDK 440n has a Fire-wire connection also that does not work either.

I have a USB external hard drive, an USB connector for my smart phone, and a
couple of Jump Drives that work with no issues at all.

Thank-you!

Do the drives show up in XP? Did you need to install drivers so that the
drives can show up in XP? Are/were there drivers for the Metal Gear Box?

There is another area I want more info on, please.

All these drives and the enclosure should not need drivers installed in XP.
My laptop is Win2K Pro. It didn't need drivers either. I may note that the
TDK burner was working and quit working. Because I do not used the DVD burner
often, I do not know when it quit working. I looked on both websites (TDK and
NEC) and additional drivers are not listed for XP.
