External dvd-burners

Hi,
I am interested in adding an external dvd burner to my system. I currently have a cd-burner and a dvd-rom drive. in doing this do I have to add a raid card for an external unit?, or do I use a usb connection. Will using the external unit cancel out my internal cd burner, and dvd rom drive, or will it just add another drive and drive letter.

User user your USB ports or 1394 ports if you have
any on oyur pc, no need to go out and buy a card
