External drives

Hi. Can I partition an external drive with Partition Magic? I don't
need all the 160GB to back up to but I don't know if Partition Magic
will retain the partitions when I disconnect the external drive which I
do when ever I'm not backing up..........Thanks. deango

Hard drives don't loose there partitions just by removing them from a
system - They need to be physically damage (eg dropping on very hard
surface), or written to by partitioning software or viruses.

Never done it personally, but you could attach it as slave to the master
then use PM to partition it if it's an IDE drive.

Partition Magic is not really needed to do this. Windows XP has
Disk Management under Administrative Tools>>Computer Management
in Control Panel. Disk Management can be used to partition an
external hard drive as well as format the partitions.

Yes, you can do it with Partition Magic. And it will retain the new
partitions when you disconnect and reconnect it.

Partition Magic did not work to format my WD HD but, once the drive was
formated it did partition the drive I have the 160GB WD drive. I used
the Disk Management tool in windows.

I do not remember exactly some thing like It could perform the requested
service. I used the windows formating tool in Administrative
services--at least I think that is where it is located.

In theory. You dont need a third party app to partition an external
drive.
