External Drive Problem

Hi,

When ever I plug an external HDD, I get an error telling me that the drive is
not ready, but I still can access the drive correctly, but the window that tells
me about the error still pop about 2 to 5 seconds after I closed it, and even if
I disconnect the drive I get the same error until I reboot the computer

How can I fix this ????

I would try reinstalling the USB ports.

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the USB Root device(s),
Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers
again automatically.

Look closely; which drive is it saying is not ready? The external or one of
hte other ones?

The only thing that the error message tells me is that "The DRIVE IS NOT
READY", and I did assume that it was the external drive, because that happenes
only when I connect an external drive

Does the external require drivers to be installed? Some do, some don't.

I think I'd try going to Device Manager and removing the drive from the
listing there. Then uninstall any drivers for it.

Restart, and let windows find it an dinstall it, and use the drivers CD if
it requires one. In other words, start over from scratch with the external
drive install.

I never had to install any drivers, it's a standard HDD within an external
enclosure, and I have a friend that uses an external enclosure with a laptop HDD
to transfert data between my computer and his, and the same thing happens on my
computer when we connect his drive. and when I connect my drive to my laptop
everything works normally
