external disk drives and anti-static bags

When you have an external ZIP drive that comes in one of those
anti-static bags are you supposed to ground yourself before you remove
it from the bag? I know you're supposed to do that with other things
and when working on the insides of computers. I couldn't find any info
about external disk drives. My older cousin told me to just hold the
metal armrest of the chair I was sitting in when I took it out of the
bag.

Hmm... my external USB Zip 100 drive has a plastic shell so static should
not be any problem.
