Hi,

I have bought an Iomega External Drive and pluged it in my PC. Win XP
detected it with a message "A high speed USB device plugged into a non High
Speed USB hub".

Now when I looked at my computer, the Iomega external drive is not listed.
This is also what happens when I plug a usb memory drive to my USB port.
What do you think is wrong with my pc? I tried pluging the drive to other PCs
and it worked.

Thanks,

Karl

Your USB speed is probably 1.1 which your Ex drive probably need 2.0 , Are
you using xp with service pack 1 ? Or just xp alone without any service
packs ? If you download service pack 2 they should work , So download
service pack 2

Basically you need to have USB 2.0 speed

Hi,

Im using SP1. I tried it with other PC that have the same config and brand
with my PC (XP Pro, SP1 and USB 1.1) and it works there. There must be
something wrong with my pc.

Please help...

Hi,

I have found the problem already. When I inserted the external drive, WIN
XP assigned it as drive F. Unfortunately, I have already a network map
connection assigned as drive F.

I went to Administrative Tools->Computer Management and change the drive
letter assigned from F to Z. I can see the external disk now (Drive Z:).

Its silly for a supposedly advanced OS to assign a drive letter that is used
already. Does windows HP have a checking facility that checks if the letter
that it is about to assign to a new drive is used or not?

Sad to say, Windows is still really an unstable OS... they just have a
great marketing strategy...

If you care to Look in Help and Support regarding drive letter
assignment you will discover that left to its own devices Windows will
assign network drives starting at Z and working towards A while Local
drives will be assigned letters progressing for A to Z. Now since YOU
were the one to STUFF the lettering scheme on your PC, perhaps the blame
should be shouldered by the one responsible for screwing it up?
