I've just bought an external CD/RW and installed it using
the installation disk it came with. I've re-booted the
PC. When I then connect it via the USB port and turn it
on, the wizard then kicks in to install new hardware. But
it keep coming up with an error saying, "Files needed.
The file 'USBSTOR.sys' on windows XP Home Edition Service
Pack CD 1 is needed."

I've no idea how to resolve this. Can anyone help?

Either of two -
a. The CDRW driver has incorrect references to files provided by Windows.
This error can be fixed by driver update from manufacturer.
b. If you have SP1 installed - somehow you managed to screw it up (maybe by
tampering with file protection feature). Then reinstall SP1.
