Extended Partitions

Brian

I am currently installing an SBS 2000 server. So far I
have just installed the Windows 2000 Server portion of it
and created one extended partition. Now, When I try to
create additional partition the extended partition option
is grayed out, and the only partion type to select from is
a primary. I was under the impression that one could
create as many extended partitions as needed.
Can someone help me with this?

Current config.

c:\ (primary partition)
e:\ (extended partition)

Thanks,
Brian

You can create up to four primary partitions, or three primary partitions
and one extended. The extended partition can, in it's turn, contain many
logical drives.

Probably, you have created an extended partition, and then a logical drive
within your extended that fills the entire extended partition.

Instead, create an extended that fills the disk, and then create several
logical drives within it.

You are almost correct. You can create as many logical drives in an
extended partition as you want but you can only have 1 extended
partition. The partition limits are

4 primary or
3 primary and 1 extended

Logical drives in extended are only limited by drive letters or if you
use mount points they are not limited.
