How can I modify a Primary Partition?

G

Guest

I have installed a Windows 2000 Server and I decided to have the following
disc configuration: Primary Partition (C): with 2GB this according the
recommendation in order to allow systems update and extended partition with
the rest of the free space which by that moment was of 34GB y asigned a that
segment the logical unit (H:). The primary partition (C:) after the
installation has a 133MB of free space from 2GB asigned previously. Now when
I tried to install and update the system with service pack 4 I got a message
that I do not have the enough space and that I should have at least 644MB of
free space. Why is that? I gave to the primary partion enough space in order
to allow update installation. The primary partition was set to 2GB according
to the sysem docuemntation in order to avoid problems like this.

Now, How can I modify that partition (C:) in order to give it more space?.

Can I in someway change the size of the extended partition (H:) or logiacl
unit (H:) in order to have that space be used for the primary partition (C:)?

I need please if someone can help with this matter.

Best regards,
Mauricio

I'd reinstall it with no less than 15 gB system drive.

But How?. I have already configured the server, network and active directory.
I have also financial application running on that server. How can I do that
without affecting the users.

And above all I would like to know why the installation manual recomend 2GB
for the installation. It doesn't say that I have to allocate at least 15GB.

I don't know what you're reading from but 2 gB is woefully to small in any
case I can imagine. Something along this line may help you.

You have 2 chooses:
1. you can hack it and install the SP4. This will delay your problem
but not solve it
2. Use commercial tools for partitioning/resizing disks like Partition
Magic(www.symantec.com) or Partition Commander (www.v-com.com).
I have done #1 with Windows 2003 SP1 installation. I had only 300MB
free and it required about 700MB free. In order to do it, you'll need
to download SP4 as a single package. Look for something like IT
download or network installation
(http://www.microsoft.com/Windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/download.asp).
You cannot get it using "Windows Update". You have to place it on a
separate drive and when started you'll have to select different drive
to create a backup/restore point.
You can use any of the #2 solutions to resize the logical drives within
an extended partition and then the actual extended partition. Once the
space is free, you can expand the primary partition. Those tools can
move/shift partitions as well (in case the space freed is in the middle
of the extended partition). The price of those solutions is between $40
and $80. PLEASE BACKUP the important information before start
moving/resizing the partitions. I had a really old disk that crashed
mechanically during one of those procedures. Be prepared since this may
take a lot of time since most of those applications do not fully
utilize the available memory so they work kind of a slow (the copy is
done in small chunks).
