Hello!

I'm using explorer version 6.0 and windows ME. Yesterday,
the browser flat quit launching. I did get an illegal
error shutdown message but don't remember it. I have a
Gateway PC with their "goback" product and using that to
go back to a system safepoint has always fixed this
problem in the past but not this time.

I uninstalled and reinstalled explorer from cd. Still no
dice.... Help! I don't want to rebuild the machine....

Thank you.....

I'm in the sam boat. IE worked fine in the morning and
after closing it in the afternoon it flat out refuses to
start. Since the Compaq didn't come with the original XP
discs I copied from my TechNet DVD the IE6.0_SP1 files. I
tried to install and got a message thet the IE on the
computer is newer than the one I was trying to install.
From another system I downloaded the IESetup program that
downloads IE from the Microsoft site. Got the same
message. Because of Microsofts integration with IE the XP
system can't be updated. I prefer not having to rebuild
the entire OS but unless someone has a solution I guess
I'll have to bite the bullet and rebuild the system.

I've been playing with Linux and using Open Office as a
replacement to MS Office. While its not as refined as
Office and XP, it hasn't even hicuped in th past 6mo. All
the Open Office files I created are compatible w/ MS-
Office and using Mozilla to access the net is easy. One
more problem with XP and I'll scrap the enitre system.

You sound as frustrated with your system as I am with
mine. I'm getting to the same point...one more problem
and I'll scrap too. I'm also a bit frustrated with the
microsoft support.

Maybe someone with the answer will help us!

Mark,
From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to work.

Or.. you might also be able to browse and download programs from the address
bar
of Windows Explorer.

Download and run Run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded from another
machine onto a floppy disk if necessary.

Then download, install, *update* and run both of these programs:
Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ (Remove items listed in red-others are
optional.)
Both programs should be updated after installation- before use.

Search for and remove other malware and note the security tips at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.
