Explorer slow when changing directorys

My mother has a problem with her Window XP. When using Windows Explorer and I
click on the plus sign to expand My Computer, it takes about 3-5 mins. to
open. It does the same when I want to save a file to disk (in any program;
Word, Excel, and so on)

I've tried using Norton Antivirus to see if she has a virus, but it doesn't
find anything (and yes it is updated). I've tried AdAware, Spy Sweeper and
other adware type software’s, but nothing fixes the problem.

I've tried alt-ctrl-del to see what else is running in the background, but
that doesn't tell me anything.

As for memory, she has 224 MB of RAM (more then enough to run Windows XP
Home Edition) 1.2 GHz Intel Celeron processor.

Anybody have any ideas on what's the problem and how to fix it?

Sounds like a device driver maybe hanging or conflicting. Does she
have all the Windows Updates installed? See if you
can find any updates for her drivers. ie: video card, sound card,
network card etc. You can use a free program like
www.belarc.com which provides a inventory of your system. Also take
a look at www.pcpitstop.com
