I frequently get the error "Explorer.exe has generated
errors....." it seems to happen randomly.
I have searched the Knowledge Base, but have not found a
solution.
I am now at the point that every second or third time I
start Windows Explorer it shuts down (the first tiem or
two it runs without errors).
I can still run other programs after the error I just
can't run explorer.
Very little is loaded from the task bar (there are 3 icons
in the task bar (1) McAfee Virus (2) my NIC Icon and (3) a
Creative PCI Audio mixer.
The problems persistes even if McAfee is disabled.
I have notices that the Creative Icon is missing after the
shut down (there may be a connection).
I have loaded updated drivers for the sound card but do
not know how to disable or remove the Creative icon from
the task bar.

I am having the same issue it seems. It seemingly
randomly shuts down, and I lose almost all of my system
tray icons. If you go to the Microsoft knowledge base,
there are in fact articles pertaining to this situation,
but they seem to pinpoint particular pieces of software,
none of which I have installed. I have been in all kinds
of newsgroups, and have seen the question asked numerous
times, but never any answer given.

Good luck. If you find the solution, please share.

In talking to customer support at Gateway they recommended
a repair of Windows 2000.
Boot the System Disk
First Choose Install windowas 2000
"it will then see you have 2000 on your HD"
Second "repair" the 2000 on your HD
So far this has worked for me with no apparent loss
of program connection.

OK, I can save you some time fomr my previous responce.
The error seems to be in IE 6 or the SP1 update for IE 6.
After repairing my system I wanted to reload the Critical
Hot fixs fomr microsoft. Lucully the first one to load
was SP1 for IE 6 ("The Problem Returned").

If you go to your remove programs in your control panel
you can find and remove the Service Pack 1 for IE 6. This
will take you back to IE 5 but in my case it Fixed the
Problem. I continued to load all the other Critical Hot
fix's from Microsoft (Careful NOT to load anythikng to do
with IE 6) and so far the problem has not returned.

I wonder if Bill knows about this undocumented feature of
IE 6.0. Good Luck
