Explorer shutdown by NT Authority/System

I replaced a defective modem with an old slow modem. When
I go on-line within a few moments I get a screen with a
shutdown notice which starts a countdown. The popup
Screen title is "NT Authority/System" "ISASS System
Shutdown C:\windows\system32\ISASS.EXE" and "Terminated
Unexpectedily with Status Code 1073741819". At the
conclusion my computer shutdowns for a restart. Would
appreciate any help I can get to get back on line. MY
operating system is Windows XP Professional.
