Explorer search is SLOW.

When I search our network from my XP Explorer search, it
takes a VERY long time. We have a Windows NT 4.0
server. It appears to be searching inside every
compressed file. My Windows 98 did not do that. Can I
exclude zipped files from the search? Is is a NT/ XP
interface problem? I do searches almost daily for disk
space management. Please help. Thanks.

Yes, XP searches inside of zip files by default. You can turn that off by
unregistering zip folders. From a command prompt window (or the start, run
box) enter the following command:

regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll

Thanks, Tom,

What will be the consequences of unregistering them? I
use zip files often.

Kristine,

Zip files will no longer be handled by XP's built in system. You may use a third-party program like WinZip.
