I've just started having problems with startup and shutdown. Both take a
long time. In addition, when I shut down, there is a message that
explorer.exe is not responding.

In addition, when I go "my computer" nothing happens. None of my drives are
displayed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Did this just start to happen after the Windows Updates?

indexing service may
be an issue.

run services.msc
and disable the indexing
service for a few days.

if it is then enable it
for a few days...

You've gotten answers that are basically scattershot guesses. This will
not be helpful to you. You need to troubleshoot methodically.

First, what changed between the time things worked and the time they
didn't? If you can identify what changed, perhaps you can reverse it.

Second, what is the virus/malware status of the computer? If you think
it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?
Be sure the computer is clean since malware is a common cause of those
symptoms:

Third, if you can't figure out what changed or it isn't apparent and the
computer is clean, do clean-boot troubleshooting to try and pinpoint the
culprit(s):

It is unlikely that the Indexing Service has anything to do with this.
It is also unlikely that you would need to do a Repair Install of
Windows to deal with this. BillW is on the right track - not that the
issues necessarily have anything to do with Windows Updates, although
they might - but by asking What Changed?

The problem occurred after moving to a new home. All hardware is the same.
Spysweeper and Norton show no problems. The only change was a new ISP from
Comcast of FL to MI.

Did you install any software from the new ISP? If so, either uninstall
it or stop it from running. It is unnecessary to have ISP software to
make a cable Internet connection. This is where the clean-boot
troubleshooting would help you so I suggest you do that.

I haven't had a chance to investigate any of the suggestions that were made
but earlier today when I turned on the computer, it booted normally and
later when I shut it down, it shut down normally.

I seem to remember that when I moved the computer to Florida in the fall, I
had a similar problem with very slow start up but had no problems with shut
down.

Now when I booted up, it hung just after the Windows XP page with moving
bars. I did a restart and it slowed after the Welcome page but then booted
OK.

I thank you for your suggestions but I think that I'll wait a bit to see if
the whole thing corrects itself like it did in the fall in FL. If it
doesn't I'll come back to the newsgroup for help.

Thanks again.
