Explorer problem

My partner uses a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop, which came with Windows XP on
a F-S disk. Everything worked perfectly, although she just ignored
prompts to update. A couple of weeks ago, I suggested that she should
really update, which she did. And, since then, she has been unable to
display any web pages, receiving instead the message 'Impossible to
find the server' (or something like that: she is French and therefore
the machine is in that language.) She can use Skype perfectly well and
can connect to the Windows update site. In an effort to resolve this
problem, she has gone to Windows-Tools-Internet Options etc and
restored default settings - but all to no avail.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions, as I feel respobnsible
(as I am regularly reminded every day!)
If there is any further information I should give, please let me know.
With thanks and best wishes to anyone who can give advice, especially
directly by email.

In WinXP SP2: You can fix Winsock by going to Start | Run and typing
CMD
In the command window type
netsh winsock reset

Actually just done this very thing, having seen what seemed like a
similar problem in another post. No luck, though, I'm afraid. Thank
you for the suggestion. Any other advice welcome!
