Explorer popups when using AOL

In the last 2 weeks, while in the AOL browser (only) I
keep getting bombarded with advertisements that launch
Internet Explorer. Is this living proof of the recently
published vulnerabilities of Explorer?

I have all the lastest patches installed, no change.

Suggestions? I don't use Explorer, only AOL and
Netscape. Can I disable Explorer? (stop laughing)

Find and remove the malware that's causing this. Work through the solutions
(CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot) at
