i'm not sure what i did, but, all of a sudden the "file open" and "file
save" dialog boxes are no longer sorted according to filename. they are now
sorted by date. i remember sorting by date at one time, but, i didn't know
that it will remain that way. now i can't turn the sorting back to the
original. i already tried unchecking the "remember each folder's view
settings", but, it remains sorted by date. is there a registry hack at
least (if not a safer way) to restore the sorting to filename?

thanks in advance!

Go into explorer (or My Computer). Select View,
Details. Click where it says "Name" above the list of
files. You might have to click again if it goes in
reverse alphabetical order. You can then go back to
View, List (or whatever).

At least I think that'll fix what you have described.

your suggestion worked only in the explorer window, not on the "Save As" and
"Open" dialog boxes. those dialog boxes are still sorted by date
(descending).
