Explorer hangs when getting properties on any file

B

Brent Allard

Had a very strange problem with a PC yesterday and now
having the same thing happen with a 2nd PC at our company
today. When you do a right mouse click on a file, it will
hang explorer for 2-3 minutes. IE does a similar thing,
will take several minutes to start responding.

Taskmanager shows nothing happening during these hangs.
The disk activity is null. You can run other applications
such as Photoshop just fine while the hang is occuring.

I've tried just about everything, including, running virus
scan (mcafee 7.1 enterprise), running adware check with
Adaware, re-installing SP1, doing a full repair of XP from
CD boot.

Any ideas?

Thanks Kelly. Unfortunately none of those have done the
trick. I'm now up to 4 machines at my site that are
exhibiting this problem.

I'm on hold with MS support right now, hopefully we'll be
able to get this figured out. If I find an answer, I'll
try to make sure and post it here.

This ended up being an application that was setup in the
registry (TextPad) that lived on a network share. The
network share was brought down last weekend. So everytime
you right clicked on a file, it was trying to access that
application.

We used a registry monitor program to find this out. We
discovered the problem about 5 seconds before MS picked up
the phone off hold. :)
