Explorer Hangs plus Losing Local Shares

Hi, this is really frustrating - hope someone knows how
to stop Windows Explorer from hanging when occasionally
accessing files - not just when going to My Computer.
Only fix is a hard boot. Have tried disconnecting my
HP5470c scanner and shutting down the WIA service as per
KBA 819017 but no result. Have XP pro and its fully up to
date, heaps of resources etc.

Also plagued by "MRXSMB The redirector failed to
determine the connection type." and eventually have to
reboot to get back locally mapped share drives - is that
likely to be related?

I had problem with HP scanner/printer plugged into the
back of it. XP didn't like the device even with a download
from HP that was supposed to make it XPable. I solved
problem by removing the power exe associated with the
scanner that was being loaded at start up. It did not harm
anything and stopped the wait state that I also was having
in XP. Scanner after that worked better in XP than in ME,
which makes it unique. Something else that may optimize
printer/scanner peripherals is if you can change bios
define from bi-directional to ECP.
