how do I get Explorer to show all folders not grouped in
various catagories?

Sorry, I was not very clear.

In Win ME when I clicked on Windows Explorer and opened My Cumputer/local
disk (C), I got a listing of individual folders. When I open the same in
Win XP, I get a grouping of folders such as "Documents and settings" etc.

How do I get Windows Explorer in XP to do the same thing. that is a
complete listing of individual folders?

In the Windows Explorer window, click on View> Arrange Icons by... and
uncheck Show in Groups.

thanks, BUT, the box containing Show in Groups is grey and nothing is
checked

Any other suggestions?

Maybe I'm not understanding your description very well. Try Folder Options>
View and experiment with the "Simple Folder View" setting. This setting
changes a few behaviors in Windows Explorer. One of these behaviors is in
regards to what happens when you click on a drive's folder.
