Explorer folders panel slow to expand drives & folders

All of a sudden my Win2K SP4 system has taken to expanding
drives and folders in the folders (left) panel of
Explorer. Once the system has been running for awhile it
seems perhaps to become quicker but initially it's mind-
numbingly slow. Any ideas??

Ooops, I didn't express that well. try 'has taken to BEING
VERY SLOW AT expanding drives and folders'.
