Explorer extremely slow

The simplest operations have suddenly become glacially slow. For
example, going up one level in a My Computer folder is taking 20
seconds or so. While it does, TM shows me that Explore is using 98% of
CPU resource.

What is the most likely cause please?

I recall a similar problem years ago, which I vaguely remember was due
to 'shellicon cache', or something like that?

One thing to check...

If you have a USB card reader, or similar device that takes removable
media, place the media in the drive - and reboot. You can then remove
the media if you desire. See if that improves the situation.

Thanks both, I'll try those suggestions. Problem seems erratic though
- sometimes much worse than others, with no obvious pattern.

I may resort to using Filemon to see if it offers any clue as to
what's happening during those sluggish folder operations. But from
past experience, I recall that most of what Filemon displays (rapidly,
and by the bucket full) tells me very little I can understand!
