Explorer.exe

I did an update yesterday from Microsoft updates, (no I don't know which one,
I was prompted). It was something .NET and it failed. At that time, I was
working in publisher and windows and both documents crashed and recovered.
Also, had to reboot. From that time now, I have not had any icons or start
bar on my desktop. Just my wallpaper. i can access My Documents through the
task manager but not anything that would run on explorer. If I type explorer
in under the the file option in Task Manager, nothing comes up and it is not
running. I am getting the CISVS.exe process that runs at about 99%. If I
try to access System Restore through Task Manager, the page comes up blank.

Anyone experience this before that can help w/o having to reinstall?

Thanks!!

Try running system restore from Safe Mode. Reboot the computer, as the BIOS
splash screen disappears repeatedly tap the F8 key until the Advanced
Options menu appears with Safe mode. Try Safe mode with command prompt. If
it logs in, then at the command line give this type this.

c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

If that doesn't work do a repair install.

You do always have a full and complete backup of important data, right?
Consider using a drive imaging program such as Acronis True Image to save a
compressed image of the drives to an external , USB connected hard drive.
Hard drives are low cost these days. An external drive enclosure is in the
$20-30 range. Image regularly to give you some protection against these
types of system problems. Restore a recent image and in about an hour or so
you're back running.

once you have recovered, highly suggest to NOT do an update with other programs running if at all possible.
