Firstly it was media player, then explorer.exe using all the cpu usage and
then freezing, unable to shutdown, so having to use the power button to
switch my notebook off. Its my first notebook and never experienced this
before, im not running more than one program when this happens, are their any
basic steps i should take to see if they rectify the problem?

Hi,
A very recent experience I had may not have any connection to your
situation. However, I will tell you what I found to be the culprit causing
the same type of difficulties you related.

This PC (purchased in July 2004) came with a three-month trial version of
Norton Internet Security, which by the way had been installed in such a way
that the trial period had expired before I bought the PC. I uninstalled it
and installed a 2004 version of Norton Anti-Virus software, along with Zone
Alarm Pro firewall. Apparently there were remnants of the Internet Security
software still residing on the PC. This year I started getting warnings from
the PC that I must activate Norton Anti-Virus, which was valid until July
2006, or it would stop working in nn days. I went along with that charade
until I started experiencing the type problems you are having.

First, I went to the Symantec web site and downloaded three pieces of
software, that cleans left over fragments of Norton products (2004, 2005 and
2006 versions). I disconnected from the Internet. Then (after closing all
open programs) I uninstalled all Norton products listed in Add/Remove applet
and rebooted the PC. Then I ran the three tools I had downloaded, by
following Symantec's instructions regarding the sequence. After a reboot I
closed everything in the Task Bar and disabled Spyware Blaster, following
which I re-installed my Norton Anti-Virus software and rebooted. It went
well and the problem has gone away. It does require a large download of
updates to the software, however. I had to manually use Live Update several
times before it was finally done with updates.

If the above sounds as if it might apply to your situation, you can find the
tools here:

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,

Many thanks for your comments and advice, and im slowing getting there... it
seems that ive had to think what happened just before the cpu went through
the roof, which may answer my question... (eek dont shout at me), I was
downloading a .avi movie, (all fine and mcafee doing its work etc) and then
attempted to open it, upon clicking the icon for the movie, it wouldnt open
and just froze the pc up (didnt realise at this time it was cpu issue) had to
switch off pc at power. anyway after posting my question, i then attempted
to delete the file and each time i right clicked to delete it, thats it the
cpu went up! I eventually deleted the whole my videos folder, losing about 40
movies, but it stopped the cpu issue, now in the aftermath of the cpu issue
mcafee has missing and corrupt elements and im just getting error messages
telling me this (every 10 seconds) and to reinstall, but cant reinstall as it
was on the pc from new (jan 06) and only option is uninstall, and write to
mcafee to sort.... im sorry if my lack of knowledge and stupidity disgruntles
you and ive checked event viewer and error messages are linked to mcafee, so
you have helped very much and ive learned alot by this episode too.

Many many thanks Gerry
