Explorer.exe uses 100% of CPU

Hi,

Today Explorer.exe started to consume a lot of resources, up to 100% and
leaves the computer unresonsible.
Problem starts, when I choose a 600Mb avi file on drive D which is on a 205
Mbyte partition, then memory consumption starts to increase from 20 Mb up to
100Mb. CPU usage increases instantly to 99 (100%). I don't do anything else
with this file. When I close the Explorer CPU remains on 100% and nom memory
isn't released.
There is other known problems, when Explorer isn't open.
Restart doesn't change the situation.

Anu ideas, what may be wrong???

How did you manage to get a 600Mb avi file on a 205 Mb partition?
What do you mean when you say you "choose" it?
Are you simply single-clicking and highlighting it, or are you
double-clicking it and trying to launch it? If you open your video
player first, then open the file what happens?

Explorer.exe is the windows interface. If your computer is on, it's running.
It's not Internet Explorer. AVI-Movie files require huge amounts of operating
space and cpu capacity. File might be corrupt. You cannot have a 600mb file

Hi,

Well, it must be 203 Gb instead of Mb. I'm sorry for the mistake.
I select the file name with mouse and make it active.
That's it, and no doubleclick. When I try to delelete or rename this file, I
get the warning that it's open and used by other application.
That's aslo after restart. I have NAV 2005 installed and there isn't any
obscure applications installed. I have experienced this Open and can't
delete problem also with rar files with normal length and without foreign
characters in their name. But earlier explorer didn't hang up the whole PC.
When I open this avi with video player it plays normally.
It looks like Windows XP Pro SP2 can't handle propelry partition over 200
Gb.

Please quote enough of the message you're responding to to put your reply
into context (as I did above). Many newsgroup participants (me, for example)
don't save already-read messages and a message without a quote is likely to
be completely unintelligible to people.

No, not so. I don't know what causes your problem, but Windows has no
problem with partitions larger than 200GB.

This has to do with Explorer searching the avi file to preview it.
Run the edit on Kelly's site:

Line 74: AVI Search Remove

See the top of the page for info on running the edit.
