Explorer.exe Terminating Due To Runtime Error.

I am running XP Pro with SP2. I keep it fully updated. I am also using IE7.

When I go to Explorer I can see the entire tree with all drives. When I
click on anything in Explorer I immediately receive the following message in
a 'Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library' box:

"Runtime Error! Program C\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual
way. Please contact the application's support team for more information".

When this occurs, Explorer terminates when I click on the 'OK' in the box. A
box does NOT appear asking me if I want to send an error report to Microsoft.
Icons in the right system tray next to the clock disappear....then some
reappear. I can access Explorer in safe mode and in regular operating mode
only via the system tray 'Desktop' toolbar. Via that toolbar I go to My
Computer....which shows me the drives and files on those drives. I can then
work with the drives and files, but this is a very slow method. Again, I have
no problem accessing Explorer.exe and all its files in safe mode.

I am receiving the following error logs in the 'Event Viewer' of Windows XP:

In the System folder of Event Viewer this message is logged:

"The IMAPI CD-Buring COM Service service entered the stopped state.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp"

In the Application folder of Event Viewer the following is logged:

"The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp"

When I click on the links above, I am taken to information pages that tell
me there is NO information on this problem.

I have done several deep scans of my system with three anti-spyware
programs. No spyware is found on these scans. I have done a deep scan of my
system with my antivirus/firewall program which also contains an anti-spyware
program....no viruses or spyware are found. I do not want to do a system
restore because I am unsure what the exact date was when this problem began
to occur. I am concerned about the critical updates I have installed and feel
a rollback to a date I would have to choose at random might cause even more
problems.

Does this problem have something to do with IE7 perhaps? I was using the IE7
Beta and had no problem with Explorer.exe. I updated to the recently released
IE7 in the past week. This is a very odd problem. I am an experienced pc
user. Nothing I have tried so far has helped. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Please do these step one ata time and let us know:
1 → Open a Run Command and type : CHKDSK /F then clcik [OK] and wait for it
to finish then Reboot your Machine.

2 → Open Run Command → Run type : MSCONFIG click [OK]
on the Configuration window click on StartUp Tab and *uncheck* recently
installed Applications/Programs and Reboot then try to reproduce the Problem
if it didn't appear the try to enable/Restart the Applications/Programs in
the StartUp One by one and see which cause the Problem and Uninstall it then
you can reinstall may the application has adamaged File causing the issue to
occur.

3 → On the IE Properties try to see what BHO/ ActiveX are installed on your
computer and send them here or search for them on MS Search o know what they
are.

4 → Do you have Java Installed and what Version, if old one try to uninstall
it and Download the newer version fron sun.com.

5 → If all fail try to do System Restore to an earlier Date when things were
in a working order, then you can install the IE release version no the Beta
although some says just wait to see how stable it is and if there is a Sec
Hole in it.

This can be caused by add-ons such as installed Toolbars. Windows Explorer
uses the same add-ons for Internet Explorer. Disable add-ons to isolate
which add-on is causing this error.

Hi Nass,

I did everything you suggested. The problem was not corrected. I even
uninstalled IE7....problem still exists. I then tried a system restore to the
first of October which was an available date in my restore system calendar.
System restore worked and worked but then stated that a restore could not be
done.

Hi WTC,

I deleted the Yahoo toolbar because I had read that some felt it might have
created this problem. That deletion did not resolve the problem. I will now
begin deleting the other add-ons to see if that fixes this problem, as you
have suggested. If that doesn't work, I will wait a bit to see if anyone else
comes up with anything. If they don't, I will reformat my harddrive.

This problem also affects my desktop immediately after I try to access
Explorer files. The desktop then goes to a white screen with information
about the Active desktop and disabling it. All very odd.

Hi Deb,
1=> First of all do a Clean Up Disk, Scan for Viruses and Malare again
online from here:
http://www.pandasecurity.com
http://www.trendmicro.com
To be sure your system is clean, also scan with your AV in safe Mode then Do
a Defrag in Safe Mode.

2=> First try to disable the Runing CD Buring service on your Machine by
doing this:
Open Run Command : Run → services.msc and Click [OK] look for the IMAPI
CD-Buring COM (It is the XP CD Burning Service by Default if you don't have
another CD Burner Runing/Installed) and Disable from starting up or Runing.

3=> Open again The Run Coomand and type: sfc /scannow and press/click
[OK] and let run and get your XP CD handy to put in if the system file
checker ask you so.

(the below option may or may not apply to you read and locate carefully)
always write down the path and location of the file/folder then you can go
back and revert the procedure if any thing gone wrong.
4=> If you have Inteli810 chipset or simler try to Rename this file in thi
path:
C:\Windows\System\IGFXSVRC.DLL
Rename IGFXSVRC.DLL to = IGFXSVRC.LLD and Then Reboot your machine.
5=> Go to Control Panel >> Add\Remove Programs and see how many Java
Installed or if there is Uninstall them and Install the latest Version.

6=> Open Runn Command and type: regsvr32 C:\WinNT\System32\rsabase.dll
click [OK] .

If all Fail Download HijackThis File and Run then Send the Report to the
Aumha Forum:
http://www.aumha.org/free.htm

To use recovery Console read this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/

Please try one step at a time and Reboot your machine and if you need more
help please post back in this Post and let us know your progress and tell us
about your Toolbars and Applications to make things a bit clear to pin point
and if you gone ahead with clean install don't forget to * BackUp your Data *.
HTH.
Please let us know.

Hello Everyone! :)

Explorer is back and fully functional! After I last posted I began deleting
additional brower helper objects, as well as Yahoo Messenger. I had deleted
the Yahoo toolbar earlier, but not Yahoo Messenger.

After I deleted Free Download Manager, which was one of the Add-ons which
was listed in IE as FDMIECookiesBHO Class (iefdmcks.dll), I found that I
could once again access Explorer.exe. I then reinstalled IE7, which I had
uninstalled earlier. Then I downloaded another copy of Free Download Manager
and installed it. Explorer.exe continued to work fine. Then I installed Yahoo
Messenger & Toolbar. Explorer is working fine!

Thanks for all the suggestions, Nass and WTC!
