explorer.exe & iexplore.exe and memory usage

I noticed recently that my computer takes a long time to
load up web pages so I checked my Windows Task Manager. It
looks like the explorer.exe & iexplore.exe are consuming a
large amount of memory, which fluctuates between the two
applications. I also have a firewall, but am not sure if
this affects the memory usage? Is it safe to close either
one or both of these applications? Thank you!!

It's not really the consumption of memory you want to look at in this situation. Usually look at the CPU percentage (System Idle percentage) available when this happens. And then find the process which is hogging the CPU.
