explorer.exe freezing up.

I am having a problem with windows explorer freezing up
when opening folders or programs menu from the start
menu. Have any ideas on this?

try swapping memory, or adding more, as it may have a
shortage of cache. Also, what HD are you running and does
it have enough free space? There are many variables with
this, what is your system configuration?
 
Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC
Click Processes Tab
Right Click explorer.exe and choose End Process
Click File
Click New Task(Run...)
Type in the popup window:
explorer
Click Ok
