Explorer.exe freezes the computer

I get this message when I try to open folder contaning video (avi) files in
one of my document folders.

Message: Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
explorer.exe appver: 6.0.2900.3156 modname: xvid.ax

After that the message disappear and I get a second error message about
drwtsn32.exe, the computer freezes and nothing else happens.
Then I open task manager and close the process DrWatson32.
Finally all back to normal

Help appreciated

Hi Ale0703,

Anytime a Dr. Watson error is thrown it generates a log. You could start
there.

Generally, the newer operating systems don't bother the good doctor much
anymore so I am guessing this is a little bit old. I would suggest turning
thumbnails off on that folder or moving them to another folder from the
command prompt. Also, if there are a huge number of avi files in one place,
you might consider breaking them up.

The system is Windows Xp SP2 normally and frequently updated.
It's not necessary to open the AVI files whit Mediaplayer or Quicktime or
other programs to freezes the computer, but is enough check the folder
resources.
If files are burned on CD I have the same problem.
If I change the computer using my laptop everything works fine.
Probably is not a AVI files problem but a computer software problem.
Please help me
