explorer.exe cause windows to hang at startup

I'm running WinXP and when stating it looks fine. It gets
past the logo and then an error message saying
Explorer.exe is not working. Upon closing the error box it
just sits there at a blank blue screen. Tried all the
options in the F8 menu and the same thing happens. Any
suggestions beside rebuilding? Thanks...

f8 again but just boot to command line. Then enter
chkdsk /f I think the path is set for the command . If
not change cd \, cd windows, If you have virus protection
there may be a command line command you can issue in your
virus directory.
