Explorer.exe--Application Error

M

Mordido

I just purchased a new a650y hp computer with Windows XP
Home Edition. For whatever reasons, I'm having problems
with START/ALL PROGRAMS/...then not all but some, e.g.
MIRCROSOFT OFFICE/MICROSOFT OFFICE OUTLOOK 2003.
Usually, I could right-click an icon, go to SEND TO, and
then DESKTOP (Creat a shortcut), click and send an icon
or short cut to the desktop, but with some of the icons
on the ALL PROGRAMS, when I right click and try to send a
shortcut anywhere, not just to the DESKTOP, I've been
receiving this error message:

EXPLORER.EXE--APPLICATION ERROR:

(X) The instructions at "0x02394156" referenced memory
at "0x000000000", The memory could not be written.

Click "OK" to terminate program.
Click "Cancel" to debug prgram.

OK. Cancel.

I've usually opted for "Cancel" to debug the problem, but
the problem (i.e. the Error Message above) continues.
I've tried "OK," just to see what would happen and the
problem still continues. Can anyone, since this is a new
computer, can anyone tell me how to fix this?

P.S. It might help to know that I've recently, like two
days ago, downloaded and installed Windows XP's SP-2.
Also, I'm having problems with Microsoft's Outlook 2003.
Not only as pertains to the Error Message above, but I
can't get it to always download my e-mail in HTML. I
keep getting messages above my e-mail indicating the HTML
versions, such as pictures, have been withheld, and I
have to click an icon so the pictures can be included.
For Windows XP Home Edition, Outlook 2003, I don't want
to have to constantly do that. I just want my mail to
automatically download in HTML with the pictures
included. Can anyone help with that problem also?

Two suggestions: If you have DivX installed try uninstalling/disabling
it.

Also, Office 2003 has some known issues with XP SP2. Some users reported
that Office 2003 Service Pack 1 fixes these issues.

Ok, thanks, and I do have DivX installed. Are you sure I
must uninstall DivX, because I had to buy it. Also, how
can I re-install SP-1 over SP-2 to fix Outlook 2003? Can
it be done? Will I lose all the SP-2 gave to my system?
Also, the Error Message I dictated below comes up in many
instances, e.g. today I went to Documents, a folder I
made, highligted a file, and tried to delete it, and the
same Error Message (Explorer.exe--Application
Error...blah, blah, blah [copy below]) appeared again.
Are saying the the DivX uninstall will fix that Error
Message, and if it doesn't, are there any alternatives?

P.S. Is there a way to download this newsgroup to my
Outlook Express news reader?

1.
Answer to your PS: type the url in the address bar
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

It should pop up outlook express, providing internet options are set up
properly.

2.
About Office 2003, you may have misunderstood. I wasn't talking about
reinstalling WinXPSP1, I was talking about updating Office 2003. There is a
new service pack for office 2003 at [watch wrap]
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9c51d3a6-7cb1-
4f61-837e-5f938254fc47&displaylang=en

What I was talking about was to install this service pack.
However, if you Do want to remove Windows XPSP2, the recommended way to do
it is via Add/Remove programs (system restore also works).

3.
Finally onto the DivX issue. The issue seems to be related to the new
memory protection feature of SP2, and due to DivX's context menu handler,
affects all files. From DivX:
http://forums.divx.com/viewtopic.php?topic=60618&forum=5

DivX are working on it and should release a new version soon. In the
meantime, you can go back to XPSP1, uninstall DivX (reinstall when it's
updated), or use a hack to stop the DivX crash.

<HACK> Backup and delete the reg key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\EncodeDivXExt
</HACK>

Sorry for the read.

I've tried to uninstall DivX, from its folders
using "uninstall," and WinXP only "beeps," beeps." I've
gone into Control/Add & Remove, and the
same "beep," "beep." I can't get DivX to leaave. When
ever I try to uninstall it, a popup windows appears
instantly and disappears. I figure it's the error
message, but XP for whatever reasons won't let it stay
long enough to read it. Bottomline, I need help finding
a way to uninstall DivX. Can you help?

<snip>

Eek! An incomplete uninstall! That doesn't sound good.
Although I could quite easily be wrong, the error messages *may* have said:

Execute: regsvr32.exe /s "C:\Program Files\DivX\Dr.DivX\EncodeDivXExt.dll"
Execute: regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\DivX\Dr.DivX\EncodeDivXExt.dll"

After scouring through the DivX forums your solution may be to temporarily
disable software memory protection:

start -> run -> C:\boot.ini
under the entry for Windows XP Professional change the /NoExecute=OptIn
to /NoExecute=AlwaysOff

So it will read something like:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Reboot.

Uninstall of DivX is now more likely to work.

Don't forget to put back /NoExecute=OptIn when done.

The only problem is that DivX is partially uninstalled...
