Explorer.exe Application Error; Can't read memory.

I have a user with a 3GHz machine with 512 MB RAM running XP Pro. She is
increasingly receiving an Explorer.exe Application Error stating

"The instruction at '<address>' referenced memory at '<address>'.
The memory could not be "read".
Click OK to terminate the program. "

When she accesses files either from my Docs or from within various apps.
this occurs. The files that trigger the error do not have overly long names
or extentions.

I haven't found anything at all about this problem in the KB pertaining to
XP Pro. I did find one article 262490 that is similar, but is for Win2k and
the fix is to install w2k SP4. Obviously, that won't work for XP.

Any pointers? I'm at a loss.

If it is then read the following

You have the following.This error was posted numerous times in another
newsgroup and all had the same trojan\virus.


1) explorer.exe
(2)SPROT.I (Trojan)
(3)BKDR THUNK.B

Run all of the below in Safe Mode



Download Sysclean_FE utility
from the address below
http://antivirus.ik-cs.com

Download CLEAN.EXE from the URL
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/clean.exe

Also run all of the below

Run Spybot, AdAware, MS Spyware, CW Shredder,etc

That is precisely the error she is getting. Since she is a power user with
30+GB files on her system, I will have to wait till next week when she will
be out of the office to run all the scans as it will take many hours.

Well, I tried all the scanners you suggested, plus McAfee's VirusScan
Enterprise 8.0, with no problems found. I did run them in safe mode, but she
still has the error and I don't know what to look for now.

Thanks for the suggestions though.
