Explorer default view.

Al Camp

My XPPro Explorer always opens with the following display in the left
panel...
DeskTop
My Docs
...All my MyDocs directories listed...
Computer
Network
Recycle Bin

I would like to have the Computer directory expanded whenever I open
Explorer.
Computer
3 1/2 Floppy
LocalDisk C:
DVD Drive D:
... etc...

How can I "set" a customized view as the "default" view in Explorer.

Thanks for any assitance,
Al Camp

Edit the shortcut's "Target" to read
%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

Good question Al...

Dave,

I've always wondered how to do this too.
Your suggestion to edit the shortcuts "target" worked well for me.

Thanks!

While we're on the subject...

Is there also a way to go ahead and have the shortcut target a drive letter,
yet without expanding and showing the subfolders in the left pane of
explorer?

I have 4 harddrives each of which have 2-4 partitions, 2 CD drives, a floppy
drive and a memory card reader.
So the drive listing in the left pane is already stacked pretty high to
begin with.
I notice that using your tip to explore "my computer" requires a little more
time to display the drives in the right pane. (as apposed to file folders)

Thanks again,

But don't trouble yourself over another good answer.... I'm quite happy with
the first one!

Dave,
Thanks very much. The Computer Directory now opens "expanded", but
unfortunately it causes the My Docs directory to collapse. I would really
like to have just those 2 dirs expanded upon opening.

Also, could you "briefly" explain how you came up with that solution.
I've got 23 years of PC "fingerboning" behind me, but I would never have
been able to solve this problem on my own. I had no idea the solution
would have involved a registry call! Doh! I thought it would just be some
twist on the Explorer "View".

Can you direct me to any resources where I might learn a bit more about
how you came up with this solution?

Again, thanks for your help. I work the MSAccess newsgroups...
hopefully, I can return the favor sometime.

scrubber,
Thanks for the reply...
I have an desktop icon to "launch" Explorer, and also a hotkey setup...
but it's really the Explorer "default view" upon opening that I'm trying to
customize.

Dave,

This selected drive "F" in the right pane. Leaving the left pane unchanged.
I was hoping to select the drive "F" in the left pane such that the folders
of "F" drive would display in the right pane.

I would also like to see your reply to Al's most recent question regarding
resources!

Thanks again,

Dave,
Thanks again. I guess I'll just leave My Docs folder"expanded". That's
the one I use the most.
Appreciate the links... I'll check then out.

AFAIK you can only have one at a time. They're just shortcuts to virtual
folders or namespace extensions. These two may help.
