Explorer crashes when deleting directories

I have a problem with Windows Explorer V5.1. Whenever I try and delete
or move a directory I get the following error message

The instruction at "0x0263415b" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The
memory could not be "written".

I can delete and copy files, or multiple files, but cannot do anything
with directories. This happens on local and network drives. I can
delete directories if I access the problem PC from a networked PC.

My PC is XP Pro, SP2 with all service packs loaded

I think the problem started when I removed Norton 2003 and installed
Norton 2007. I have tried removing Norton 2007, but has no effect.

I have done a sfc /SCANNOW but has not helped. Full virus scan found
no problems

The error message always has ???415b in the address.

I have done a binary compare with another explorer.exe on a working
system, and they are identical.

Apart from moaning about Norton, any ideas

Hi Michael,

Does explorer.exe crash when you simply right-click on a folder/directory,
as well?

No, I can right click and do everything else, eg open, explore as long
as it does not involve deleting or creating directories. For instance
if I try and Send a directory it crashes, but I can send a file.

By the way, the explorer.exe is version 6.0.290.2180 (V5.1 is the
operating system which is displayed in Exporer About Windows).

Michael,

Two options that I can think of:

1. Check the Event log (Application). It may sometimes have the module name
that caused the crash.
2. See if this crash is caused by a third-party shell extension (not
necessarily a context menu handler). For more information, see "Method 2" in
the following page:

Ramesh,

I tried method 2, and a bit by luck discovered that Wise-ftp was
causing a conflict. Slightly odd as the program hasn't been changed
for 2 years, but using your tool to disable the extension, took my
problem away. I then reneabled the extension, and the problem came
back. It looks like this may be a solution for me.

Thanks

Michael
