Explorer causing error in OLE32.DLL

G

Guest

I recently downloaded IE 6.0 Service Pack 1 onto a Windows ME machine. When
the system went to reboot, part way through desktop loading, an error message
appeared - "Explorer has caused an error in module OLE32.DLL. Explorer will
now close." Clicking on the "Close" button on the error message seems to
prompt Explorer to load again and produce the same message. Now I'm in an
infinite loop and I have no access to the desktop, including the Start
button. The only way I can get out of the situation is to power down the
computer. Is there some way to get into the system prior to desktop loading
and perhaps turn off Explorer log enough to uninstall and reinstall it (if
that would be the solution)?

Thanks!

Hi Michael :)

First:

Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs
Click on the Windows Setup tab.
Double click on the Communications heading and make sure that
the Universal Plug and Play box is NOT checked

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan -

Thanks for the response but what you're sugeestingg is what I can't do.
Because the desktop has not fully loaded when the message appears, I have no
desktop access, including the Start button so I have no way to get to Control
Panel.

Thanks.

Hi Michael :)

Then can I assume that, if you don't have desktop access, you can't do a
system restore by the ususal fashion? Let me do some checking.....hang in
there.....I'll be back shortly..

Hope this helps.

Hi Peter - Yes, I can open in Safe Mode and shut off all Windows drivers but
the same thing occurs.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Michael :)
Thanks Jan - You're right - I cannot perform any Windows-driven function.

OK...thank you for the info on the Safe mode...that will help. I'm waiting
to hear back from one of the WinME guru's on this.....there are several
things that need to be considered for ME. .I'll be back...

In Safe Mode try going to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 ole32.dll

That may do nothing, but it might help.

Hi Michael :)

In conferring with the WinME guru's in the MS WinME general group, it was
suggested that, as you are able to access through Safe Mode, you try do a
System Restore. MVP Noel Paton said that the IE6 install should have set up
its own restore point, so it would certainly be worth a try to do a System
restore. If that will work, then you can at least regain control of your
machine, and we can go from there. Let me know how you do on this.

Thanks alot Jan - I'm not sure that will work because I'm not sure the
desktop gets fully loaded in Safe Mode either before the message appears but
I'll let you know tomorrow.

Again, thanks alot for all your help.

Yes...please do. If you can't get the right access, then we can try another
approach.
Again, thanks alot for all your help.

You're very welcome. We're all here to help you. :)

Hi Michael :)

Press Alt+D while the error message is still on the screen. That will bring
up the Detailed Error Message (same format as the Details button on Windows
95/98 errors).

Copy the first part of the detailed error message, up to the word
Registers:, and include that in you response.

That detailed message may give us something to search the KB and other
online sources with.

Hi Jan -

Sorry to take so long getting back to you but I got called away for a couple
of days.

But, YEAH! The idea that you and your collegues came up with worked with
some minor modification. There was no restore point for the installation of
Service Pack 1 so I'm not even sure it was ever actually installed. However,
I did install a new cable modem a couple of hours earlier so there was a
restore point for that.

Now, the saga continues. Once I got control of my desktop back, I spent
most of yesterday afternoon running ScanDisk (it found errors) and
reinstalling Windows ME. During those processes, I did frequent restarts and
everything was working fine. The last thing I did was download some spyware
protection. I installed it, ran it, and everything was still fine. I shut
down and walked away, confident that everything was fixed.

About three hours later, I rebooted and - guess what? The exact same error
message is back at the exact same spot! The only thing that is similar so
the first occurance of this problem is a file download. Could that be a
source of the problem (I know that's reaching)?

At any rate, I ran a system restore again from a restore point that appears
to have been created before I installed the spyware protection (probably from
the reinstallaiton of Windows). On the first pass, the restore got about a
third of the way through then a "program not responding" message appeared. I
ended that task and the restore shut down and did a restart. The restore
screen came back saying that the previous restore did not complete
successfully and wanted to continue from the point at which it failed
previously. I ran it again and got no error message but the restore did an
abrupt shut down and restart as soon as I invoked the restore. All
subsequent attempts to restore now do the same thing at the same spot. It
just abruptly shuts down, does a restart and then wants to go again.

I realize that at this point, this may not necessarily be an IE issue with
which I should be taking your time. If you need me to move to the ME
newsgroup team, just let me know. If you're still interested though, I'll
get the error message details as you suggested in your last post and let you
run with it if you want.

I sincerely appreciate all of your help and the help of the other resources
you have marshalled into this problem. Thank them for me.

Michael

If you didn't first uninstall IE6 before reinstalling WinME, things have
gotten even more complicated. You now have what the WinME Pros call
"Version Soup". Here's MVP Noel Paton's fix:

Blame Jan! <g,d&r...> She posted that she'd already conferred with you on
this one:

One wonders if OP had previously reinstalled WinME after having upgraded to
IE6?...

Ooooh - I even have one of his WinME posts tagged for response...... maybe
I
should wait and see if he comes back to this one?
