explorer accessing internet?

Rob

we have xp pro on many systems we are using, on one
system, its being used at another location that has a
dial-up internet connection.

that computer locks-up and/or bogs down rather frequently
when running at its primary location (that uses a dial-up
connection). using other software, i've found that
explorer is trying to access the net and when theres no
internet connection open (at the loca that is using dial-
up), the system pretty much of the way grinds to a halt
until explorer gives up on this.

at our main location, we have an always-on LAN and when
bringing this system in question to this main location,
we never have any problems (i suspect because explorer
can access the net as needed)

has anyone else run into this? does anyone know why
explorer is trying to do this? can it be disabled from
trying to do this?

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Basically, the computer is trying to dial out because some program on
its hard drive is trying to get on line. It may be legitimate such as
Windows Update, a program such as RealOne or Quicktime trying to check
for updates, etc. It may be a trojan. You need to find out what
programs and services are running on that machine. Look in Task
Manager, look in the startup tab using msconfig. Run a virus scan.
Check the Options on programs installed on that box, looking for
automatic updating types of things.
