I recently updated an older Dell with XP home edition(s.pack1). If I
type in a site, www.anysite.com, it takes 1-2 minutes to find the site.
If I type in http://www.anysite.com, it finds the site right away. I
surfed Google groups and found references to registry entries that
could cause this. I checked the registry (it was OK)and also ran a
program that added entries to fix the problem but it persists. It is
unlikely that there is any spyware on the system as I formatted the
drive before installing the operating system and have not surfed the
web. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Clarification to above posting. My site examples were interpreted as
links. The example is meant to illustrate that without the http://
prefix, Explorer can't find the site right away. Typing
"www.anysite.com" does not work but typing "http://www.anysite.com"
does.
