EXPLANATION for slowdowns with Windows Explorer & MS Office apps

This discussion from Slashdot (sorry, can't find any news stories yet)
explains what's happening in the last 24 hrs causing slowdowns for
millions of users, with Windows Explorer & MS Office apps.

If you can operate without network connectivity, everything will speed up
if you disable your network connection. (I realize a lot of people can't
use that option, however.)

If you use NAV and MS Office (2000 thru 2003 versions, anyway) then you
will see a substantial speed-up with *those* apps if you just disable the
NAV plug-in to office apps, per the discussion. (Method varies slightly
with different NAV versions.) However, this won't help with things like
the long delays on right-clicking or the slowdowns with Windows Explorer.

Fundamentally, everyone will just have to wait it out until the
certificate problem is resolved.

Hi

Symantec has posted an article about this issue as well:

After updating to the January 7th or 8th virus definitions, your computer slows
down and Microsoft Word and Excel will not start

Yes, thank you; I did not scan thoroughly enough before posting (although
I *did* look). In fact I just came back on the group to add a note that
there is info posted to other groups already about this, and I see that
info has made its way here.

The workaround of disabling the certificate check, as Symantec suggests,
does work for most people and has so far worked for all of my clients.

(Apologies if my post merely added to the "chatter" about this.)

Thanks for the heads-up. I was uncertain as to what I have been seeing since
yesterday. Imagination? Some bit of malware managed to sneak in? A bad
certificate would have been WAY down on my list of problems to check
(position 1,334,948, just after "phase of moon causing random RAM electron
warpage").
